Disruption to HMRC PAYE systems

Friday 19 June 2009

The summer is upon us and while everyone is away H M Revenue & Customs have decided that after much planning now is the time to update their PAYE systems.

The system upgrade will have an impact on some HMRC services albeit just between 12 and 29 June and as the system is made available to HMRC during July. However, we all know that system upgrades almost always attract Gremlins so the impacts might be felt for a little longer!

To summarise, the impacts while the changeover happens are as follows:

  • Service interruptions should only impact on PAYE business
  • Contacting HMRC during the transition
  • The impact on self assessment processing - If the SA return includes PAYE components and you have requested a manual repayment there will be a short delay.
  • The impact on corporation tax processing - CT returns are worked on a completely different IT system and will not be affected by the introduction of PAYE Service.

The full details are contained in a letter from HMRC to the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales which is available on the ICAEW website by clicking here.
